Uptown

UpTown, Italy’s first smart district, is part of a large-scale masterplan dedicated to the urban regeneration of a vast area in the northwest of Milan, close to the MIND district and Fiera Milano.

This ambitious project saw Scandurra Studio working on two residential spaces designed to seamlessly integrate with the existing urban and landscape structure. The development is not isolated but instead relates with the central park and surrounding streets through pedestrian pathways, expanding the system of public and shared spaces.

The buildings are characterized by horizontal continuity, with defining elements that emphasize the accumulation of residential units. Large balconies, designed as outdoor rooms, wrap around much of the structures, creating a strong relationship with the surrounding green spaces. A system of golden and bronze elements forms a delicate screen between the interior and exterior, working in harmony with the opaque volumes to create a light and luminous ensemble.

“There is something valuable in a project, something recognized as a value-an attention to how things come together, a beauty that can be achieved through care and thoughtfulness, not necessarily by spending more money. I’d call it a democratic beauty”. Sustainability is at the heart of the project, both economically and innovatively. The use of resources and technological solutions makes Uptown a community-oriented neighborhood, designed with the needs of its residents in mind.

The district “fits into the surrounding urban context, mending gaps and enriching the wider urban area with new opportunities and functions,” as noted in the article “UpTown Milano”: One of Europe’s Most Advanced Smart Districts. These qualities helped the project earn the GBC Quartieri® Gold certification for the first phase of the masterplan. GBC Quartieri recognizes urban regeneration projects that focus on enhancing quality of life, as well as preserving and developing the land.

Uptown serves as a valuable example of how to inspire and implement new approaches to managing public spaces, improving connections, and fostering technology and well-being within local communities.
