Shapes Over Time

The theme of urban regeneration and the preservation of historic buildings is a key part of the ongoing debate concerning cities with rich, layered heritage.

In Milan, Scandurra Studio stands out as a leading proponent of this approach, with Alessandro Scandurra sharing his concept of “regeneration” in an interview with Abitare.

“The goal is to enhance the existing city without distorting it,” the architect explains, highlighting the importance of analyzing the current context and the project’s potential impact on the community. The studio’s interventions range from 17th-century palaces to early 20th-century buildings, each with unique functions and structures.

Starting with a study of a building’s identity, a program is developed to adapt it to the city’s specific needs. This may involve a radical redistribution of interior spaces, or, in some cases, more targeted actions that aim to elevate and enhance the quality and expressive potential of individual elements.
