Scuola Olmi
From those who build Milan to those who imagine it: Scandurra Studio’s project for the new generation. Students from the school met with the studio’s architects to discover the behind-the-scenes of the job.
The collaboration between ICS Ermanno Olmi and Scandurra Studio Architettura stems from the “Milano Città Aperta” project, which brought together primary school students and the studio’s architects. This initiative encouraged the children to explore their neighborhood, Bovisa-Maciachini, which is currently undergoing significant urban regeneration, and imagine alternative opportunities for it.
The first meetings focused on sharing ideas and designs, leading to the creation of a “city map” done by the students. This allowed them to engage with their surroundings, first theoretically and then practically, through a neighborhood tour. The students experienced a creative approach to urban planning, starting with a hands-on workshop. With the help of the studio’s team, they constructed various landscapes, paying attention to the unique characteristics of each environment and its potential inhabitants.
Following this initial experience, a second meeting took place, where the students embarked on a neighborhood tour with the mission of documenting and collecting elements that sparked their curiosity. This shared experience was later discussed in class, revealing emotional nuances between the groups and highlighting how the same neighborhood can reveal multiple facets.
What makes this latest event special is the opportunity for the students to get a direct look at the work done by the studio, concurring with its move to the new headquarters at Viale Stelvio 66. Sharing and collaborating are at the heart of the school’s philosophy, which integrates alternative and stimulating activities into its curriculum to engage students and families in an open and multicultural environment. The studio opens its doors to a new generation, eager to understand and explore their territory and its transformation.
“The Ermanno Olmi Comprehensive School maintains close relationships with institutional and community organizations, valuing every contribution and positioning itself as a key social and cultural reference point while also expanding its educational offerings.”
The dialogue between architects and students serves as a lens to view the future-a meeting of two generations and a constructive conversation where imagination and rationality shape the city of tomorrow. The concepts of neighborhood, urban regeneration, and community are explored through a hands-on approach, allowing young students to participate in an ongoing process that helps them understand the city as it is today, while also inspiring them to dream of an ideal place where inclusivity, well-being, and accessibility coexist.
