Scandurra Studio Architettura Wins International Competition for the Reconstruction of Schools in Ukraine

Scandurra Studio Architettura is proud to announce its victory in the international competition “Future School for Ukraine”, organized by the Lithuanian Ministry of Foreign Affairs. This contest aims to rebuild schools damaged by the war in Ukraine. This prestigious competition addresses the dramatic destruction of the country’s educational system, where over 1,600 schools have been affected by Russian bombings, with 197 of them destroyed.
The winning project by Scandurra Studio, “NEW – Neighbourhood for Educational Wonder”, was awarded for its adaptability, sustainability, and quick implementation. Funded by the Lithuanian Ministry of Foreign Affairs Development Cooperation and Humanitarian Aid Fund, the project will serve as a model for building new schools in Ukraine. It will be available free of charge to Ukrainian institutions and international partners by February 2025.
Architecture for Social Good
The “Future School for Ukraine” project is more than just a construction plan: it is an example of socially engaged architecture, placing the well-being of affected communities and the future of new generations at its center. “Every restored school is a symbol of resilience and rebirth”, said Alessandro Scandurra, founder and creative director of the studio. “This project represents our concrete contribution to giving Ukrainian children a better future in a safe and sustainable educational environment”.
Sustainability was one of the foundations of the winning project: efficient materials and innovative construction solutions will minimize environmental impact while maintaining high standards of functionality and adaptability. The new schools will be designed as resilient spaces, capable of harmoniously integrating with the local urban and social context, supporting not only education but also the recovery of communities.
An International Cooperation Project
The project exemplifies how international cooperation can lead to tangible results. Supported by the Central Project Management Agency (CPMA) and Ukraine’s Agency for Infrastructure Reconstruction and Development, the “Future School for Ukraine” project is the result of collaboration between architects, education experts, and government institutions from various countries.
As emphasized by Lithuanian Deputy Foreign Minister Simonas Šatūnas, this project not only aims to ensure educational continuity in Ukraine but also to strengthen ties between European countries involved in the reconstruction. “The experience gained from this project will further enhance international cooperation and will be a key element in preparing for the Ukraine Reconstruction Conference to be held in Rome”, said Šatūnas.
To efficiently address the project’s complexity, Ukrainian architect M.A. Vustianskyi, along with specialists from DEERNS Italia for energy and systems and CEAS for structure and prefabrication, were included in the design team.
