The essence of the lightbulb, the potential of LED technology, the miniaturization of its components – like a jellyfish: solid yet transparent, dense yet weightless. Two parts interconnected: a thin, engraved plate resembling vinyl records to diffuse light, and a thermoformed plate housing the light source, bent to form the joint. The plate is sandblasted on both sides, transforming light into a tangible volume. At the same time, it becomes a thin, suspended disc of light.
Inspired by Robert Fludd, when the lamp is off, it reflects the space around it while hinting at a dense interior. Almost nothing, yet filled with light. The entire lamp is illuminated, lighting above and below in two distinct ways based on the materials. Like a traditional bulb, the light diffuses 360°. An optical tool, the light source transforms into a three-dimensional light effect. When off, it seems to disappear, making the room feel larger.
When switched on, it becomes a suspended presence, reminiscent of Ghirri’s photographs of shop windows: the densities of transparency, the hinted forms, the halo, the softened edge of light, and the precise, sharp border. The thickness, the diffusion of a contour, and the spread of light – a gradual transition. The design reflects how one thing becomes another. As it mirrors the space around it, a pulsing life can be glimpsed within.
The concept isn’t to block or waste light but to channel and define it, designing the way it reaches us. When suspended, the room itself becomes the lamp’s boundary. When mounted on the ceiling, even the ceiling comes alive. The lamp and the room are not indifferent to one another; they work together, creating a new domestic landscape. In medieval times, windows were sources of life and work, chairs were carved into wall niches – now, the light source shifts, becoming the room itself. No longer a confined space, but a free, expansive space of possibilities. A modern space.
“Fludd is about the alchemy of light. Its form is deeply connected to the physics of diffusion and diffraction of light. It is not an object in itself, but a device. Its simplicity transforms it into an iconic and almost immaterial symbol.”
